Biblical Wisdom for Kids: A Review of Lads & Ladies of Wisdom

Do you ever tell your kids to stop being so foolish? Plead with them to use common sense? Wish they’d make better decisions?

What they really need is WISDOM!

Do you want to help your kids respond well in any situation? Become respected and successful? Help them develop biblical wisdom.

Wisdom is not common. No one is born with it. Wisdom is developed through purposeful training and modeling.

Think that’s a big job? You’re right.

Thankfully, God has given us the Bible, a book full of wisdom. One part, Proverbs, contains Solomon’s instruction to his own son on how to develop wisdom! Yet Proverbs is so full of information, it can be hard to know where to start.

Let me introduce Lads & Ladies of Wisdom, a character curriculum based on the book of Proverbs. This set of lesson plans was created by Kathie Morrissey (of The Character Corner). It is designed to help you present your kids with a clear  picture of biblical wisdom.

Lads and Ladies of Wisdom Review

I’ve had the privilege of reviewing both the curriculum (lesson plans) and the activity book. I think they’re great! (Yes, I received free copies. That has not affected my opinion!)

Wisdom is something we’ve been trying to instill in our kids for a long time. I’ve often thought, “I know the Bible; I should be able to come up with little lessons about _______.” Its not always that easy! “Coming up with” something takes time and effort.

We do read Scripture as a family regularly and include biblical principles in a lot of our instruction. Even so, Lads & Ladies of Wisdom has made my life much easier in regards to presenting my children with a complete picture of biblical wisdom.

Thank you, Kathie, for doing all the work!

Basic Elements:
  • 20 weeks of lesson plans (material for 4 days; review on the 5th)
  • weekly memory verse
  • Bible verses to read each day
  • easy-to-remember, bite-sized “keys” derived from the verses
  • short explanation of each concept (read verbatim or use your own words)
  • simple activities to reinforce the lesson
  • suggested prayer; vital reminder that we must rely on God to develop wisdom in ourselves and our kids
  • optional activity book includes a variety of word puzzles for each lesson as well as both cursive and print copywork pages

Important Highlights:

Lads & Ladies of Wisdom is truly a “grab-and-go” curriculum. As long as you have the week’s pages printed out ahead of time, there is no preparation required. That makes it a winner for me!

The lessons are short! That makes them a winner for the kids!

The “keys” are easy to remember. I’ve enhanced these by devising motions for the kids to perform when they say each one. Here’s an example:

The kids enjoy earning jewels (printable included) to add to their treasure chests when they can say the keys and verses. (I offer jewels daily since the kids involved are young.) A printable treasure chest is included, but I let the kids draw their own.

After just two weeks of material, I’ve been able to incorporate the truths learned into daily instruction and correction.

This is an e-book. Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with e-books! I like to get my hands on things and flip through them while sitting on the couch. However, both the curriculum and the additional activity book are quite lengthy! The e-book format allows the cost to remain low and lets me print only the pages we actually use, including multiples when necessary. (Your kids don’t tear up papers when they get upset, do they?)

Lads & Ladies of Wisdom is designed for elementary age students.  The content is beneficial for every age! I have been using it with my 2nd grader and 5 year olds. I have incorporated my 5th graders by having them help with the activities and listen to the others practice the keys.

Using this curriculum will not MAKE your kids wise! No, only God can do that. Learning these principals will help increase their desire for biblical wisdom. They will also start to recognize their dependance on God to develop that wisdom.

My prayer as we continue to make our way through these lessons comes from these verses:

  1. Thank you for sharing a synopsis of this material and your experience using it, imparting wisdom with your kids. I appreciate you linking this up with us at Grace & Truth!

    • Thanks for visiting, Holly. Teaching (and learning) wisdom is a lifelong pursuit! So glad God gave us Scripture to guide us along.

  2. Hello!! Thank you so much for the opportunity! My niece and nephews are going through the first book and they love it! What a nice surprise this would be for them! So generous of Kathie to give two copies of it away!

    • So glad your niece and nephew are enjoying the first part, Anel. This would make a great follow-up when they are finished. Thanks for visiting.

  3. I would LOVE LOVE this! I have four elementary age children that would greatly benefit from this! How wonderful that this is available to help guide and teach our children! Thank you!!

    • Thanks for visiting, Nelly. It is definitely a great blessing that Kathie is putting her years of wisdom and practice into developing tools for those of us who are coming along behind.

  4. Love this! I wish I could home school my kids, but I have to work instead. 🙁 I am tying to do as much as I can though with the time I have so I wrote a children’s book for my kids and self-published it instead. No lesson plans but a very helpful read for them on how to love like Jesus. Hope to write more during the summers. That is the extent of my home schooling– little books on godly living in a way they can understand. I do have a lot of mommy friends though who might enjoy this curriculum for sure. Thanks for sharing! Found you at the linkup on Equipping Godly Women. God bless!

    • Hi, Theresa. Looks like your doing a great job investing in your kids lives. Your little books sound neat. Lads & Ladies of Wisdom takes only 5-15 minutes a day, so it would make great Bible time material for any family.

  5. Oh WOW this looks like a great resource for kids. I would love to have a copy of this!

  6. I know we must trust God for this, but oh how I pray that they will know wisdom. You are so right, wisdom is not innate. It is only God given. I also much prefer an actual book, but I understand the why about ebooks. Oh, and mine does rip pages! 🙂 Thanks for the info Abi, I will check it out!

    • Good to hear from you, Erica. We sure do have to trust God to work in our kids’ hearts even though we are responsible to give them the right instruction. Have a great weekend with your family.

  7. Oh, I would love to win this! I am looking at Bible curriculum right now, so this is a very helpful review. I love how I can use it for multiple ages. Does the girl’s and boy’s book work together?

    • Glad this was helpful for you. It is definitely easy to use with everyone. There are not separate books for boys and girls. I see the curriculum book as one for parents to use as they instruct; it also contains the activity cards and coloring pages. The Activity Book has additional puzzles and copywork for reinforcement. Since it is an e-book, you can print as many pages as you need for kids. I use different pages for different kids. Let me know if you have any more questions.

  8. what a great way to get the kids started on Biblical wisdom!

  9. This looks like a great resource! Thank you for sharing and I I love your disclaimer 😀

  10. This looks like a great resource. I recently read through Proverbs and there is so much to learn from it!

  11. Wisdom is so important and yet, it isn’t very common anymore…. it is definitely something to teach our children and to learn in our own lives also.

  12. I would love to have a copy and I would also love to know if it could be adapted for a Sunday School class? What do you think?

    • Yes, it would make a great Sunday school material, Helene. Depending on the age of your class, you could cover an entire topic each week (3-4 keys) for 20 weeks of lessons or spread it out and spend more time on each topic. The activities could easily be done in a big or small group.
